Who would have thought that the very motivation to wake us up would come in the guise of a billionaire who embodies all that we despise in ourselves. But he is just the one we have been waiting for.
The birth of the Human Potential Movement in the 1960’s brought with it a plethora of Self-Improvement gurus and consciousness expanding drugs. Yet, it has paled in its impact on waking up the masses compared to one month of Donald Trump as president. Virtually every day, we are witnessing throngs of people rising up and taking to the streets. Can you think of any moment in history when we have so rapidly recognized and experienced such solidarity?
We have been telling ourselves that “we are the ones that we’ve been waiting for”. True enough. Yet to truly own that, we have needed a catalyst. A threat big enough to fuel us getting off our complacency. Indeed, Donald Trump may well threaten everything that is of Life. From our civil rights to the delicate balance of life on earth, he is taking us on a train that if allowed to take its course, will literally accelerate and possibly end in the demise of the human species.
At some point in the 1990’s I remember I started feeling that humanity would be traveling down a path where our very existence would be at stake and that once we reached the precipice of our existence, we would look at the people standing with us. We would look past race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation to see that each person has ideas, strengths, and talents that may be exactly what is needed for us to survive and even thrive.
Without Mr. Trump’s vendetta against all things of Life would we be gathering ourselves as quickly as we are? We are stepping up and freeing ourselves from our habit of deferring to others to make our decisions for us. We are disengaging from this system of oppression and taking back our power.
Yesterday I was reflecting on our present justice system. With all its red tape, it appears to move at a glacial pace. Although it was designed to keep our government in check, it cannot keep up with Mr. Trump’s daily breaking of ethics rules and his constant conflicts of interest, with his many companies and corporate cronies profiting from his policies. I see that he is giving this archaic system and all of us the opportunity to ratchet up our game. Like our antiquated justice system, how many other systems are stuck in their tracks? He has stepped in with boldness and we have the opportunity to feel and act on our fierce and bold truth-telling.
“We are the ones we’ve been waiting for” and Mr. Trump is giving us the spark to fully stand up and realize our human potential. Thanks Donald.
